The advisory, released on March 9, 2026, urged Americans in the country to heighten vigilance and take precautionary measures. According to the alert, possible targets include the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the Consulate in Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated educational institutions.

While no specific locations or groups were named, the embassy recommended varying travel routes and schedules, remaining aware of surroundings, avoiding predictable patterns, and reviewing security measures with family and colleagues.

The advisory builds on the U.S. State Department’s broader Level 3 travel warning for Nigeria, which advises reconsidering travel due to terrorism, crime, kidnapping, and civil unrest. Certain regions, including Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa states are considered particularly high-risk.

Analysts noted that terrorist groups in Nigeria have historically targeted public spaces such as schools, markets, places of worship, and government buildings, often without prior warning.

The alert has been amplified on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), with outlets sharing guidance for Americans in the country.

There have been no reported incidents following the advisory, but the embassy emphasized the importance of remaining alert.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time updates. Non-U.S. nationals are advised to monitor guidance from their respective governments and local news sources, and to exercise heightened caution, particularly in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan.
